Splayed

I saw a pile of color pieces, picked them up, and splayed them–as if, by chance, they had been dropped one on top of another. A dark cutout became the core. I gathered more cutouts and then came three more working layouts. I was intrigued. It all came about quickly.

Earlier this week I had come across Jean Arp’s collage: Collage with Squares Arranged According to the Laws of Chance. Arp had torn rectangular pieces of paper and pasted them on paper using the element of chance. I have always liked this piece. I feel very sentimental about it. Although I wasn’t thinking about Arp’s collage when I suddenly was propelled to make these splayed bursts of color, seeing it again happily led to my use of chance as a slightly more pronounced art element.

I will be checking these works in progress out in the coming days, making changes. I know they need to be on bigger paper if I am to capture them with paste.

What happened to the grid? o my. We’ll see if the light of a new day changes…things.
