blue. blue next to blue. lighter, darker, smaller, bigger, thinner, wider. differently blue. blue variations. each so staunchly owning its blue.
the white? openings…
I am struck by how firmly each blue piece possesses its blue shade. As if there’s no interaction with its neighbors. Illusion. Strong independent parts, separately and together, create the various events in this visual story about “blue.”
This work began with a range of colors until my emotions led me to select only blues from a pile of colorful cut pieces. A friend had lost a dear sister, and I was feeling sad for her. blue. I made some initial decisions. For example, the tallest piece in each row would touch the row above to show the connection of all the pieces. Then, like fictional characters, I let the blue pieces tell their part of the story. Moving them around til their visual story was told.
There’s the word blue and the word sad. And then there’s all the variations.
