Working with Color Pencil

Pencil Sketch

Working with color pencils has captured my attention. The light shining through the color bands of this sketch strikes sustained harmonic effects. Pleasing.

With this pencil sketch I explored the effect of using repetitive patterns with slight variations in width to create movement. I believe that seeing a recent exhibition of Bridget Riley’s stripe paintings has opened up new perspectives still using YOG and still motivated by the classical Greek frieze of a woman walking.

Then I decided to translate the sketch on to horizontal off-white paper using color pencil. The paper was smoother than the sketch paper I used so the color is darker – not as much light coming through. The width variation in the pattern seems to be barely noticeable, which appears to slow down the eye’s movement across the paper, along with the semi-opacity of the color.

It’s exciting to see how the slightest of variations can create significant changes. To be continued.
