This painting is in the virtual exhibition “Colors of Hope” hosted by Gallery X, juried by Vicente Ortiz Cortez. Access the tour at davinciartalliance.org to see all the wonderful art inspired by hope. The tour is available through the end of September and then will be archived on the Da Vinci Art Alliance website.

The open call for this exhibition went out before the challenge of COVID-19 confronted us, but proves to be timely.

This work, like much of my art, is inspired by a fragment of a Greek relief (see blog image) depicting a sideways view of a woman walking. Her right foot raised to take the next step forward. More than any other art I’ve made that directly is inspired by the relief, I feel that this painting captures my response best so far. The mix of horizontal and vertical bars reflects the figure’s movement forward with a steady, assured pace. The chosen colors were toned down with titanium white to project a sense of humility before an unknown future. I wanted to express the overall sense of calm I feel from the figure that conveys a quiet strength to keep moving.
